Exciting blockchain-Based game, Off the Grid, Hits Early Access
One of the most anticipated Blockchain-based games popped up in early access on Tuesday, offering a glimpse into its mechanics and gameplay.
Avalanche-based "Off the Grid" is now available to Play in a limited form on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, as well as on PC via the Epic Games Store.
Gameplay Overview
Developed by Gunzilla Games, which has its own Avalanche L1 (aka subnet) called GUNZ, Off the Grid is a battle royale shooter that drops players into a reality show-like Experience, where they’ll have to fight to survive in large-scale online matches.
While Off the Grid draws inspiration from popular battle royale titles like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and PUBG, it also introduces some unique features. Players can equip robotic limbs and swap them during a match to gain new abilities, adding a fresh twist to the gameplay.
Moreover, the game integrates Blockchain features, allowing players to mint rare weapons and items as NFTs. These NFTs can be traded and sold, with the in-game Economy revolving around the upcoming GUN Token on Avalanche.
Early Access Details
The early access release of Off the Grid is not the full game Experience but provides a playable preview of what's to come. The free-to-play game features a large city map and a 60-player mode called “Extraction Royale,” where squads of three players battle to be the last one standing.
One question that has intrigued many players is how Off the Grid would handle crypto integration on consoles, particularly since Sony and Microsoft have been cautious with blockchain games. While details on console integration remain unclear, the game does offer in-game items denominated in the GUN token on the PlayStation 5 early access version.
Although the actual GUN token has yet to launch on the Avalanche mainnet, a testnet version of the token has been used in previous playtests. Decrypt reached out to Gunzilla Games for further clarification on the blockchain integration, awaiting a response.
Support From Major Streamers
The release of Off the Grid's early access version was accompanied by support from major streamers like Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, who has a custom character skin available in the game. Ninja joined other popular streamers, Seth “Scump” Abner and Tim “TimTheTatman” Betar, in a promotional stream on Twitch.
Off the Grid promises 60 hours of narrative-driven gameplay, offering a battle royale experience with a cinematic story angle, a departure from traditional genre entries. Gunzilla Games, co-founded by film director Neill Blomkamp (“District 9,” “Chappie”), aims to deliver a unique gaming experience with a strong narrative focus.
