In a recent Development, Former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Chief of Investigations Richard Weber highlighted the challenging circumstances faced by Nigerian Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan during his incarceration in Nigeria. On an episode of Illicit Edge’s “Designated” podcast aired on October 3, Weber revealed that Gambaryan's detention in Kuje prison placed him alongside dangerous criminals, including terrorists.
Gambaryan's Situation: A Hostage, According to Weber
Weber emphasized the incongruity of placing Gambaryan, a former law enforcement official working on compliance issues at a cryptocurrency company, in the same facility as dangerous criminals. He called for Gambaryan's release to reunite with his family in California.
According to Weber, Gambaryan has been imprisoned for over 200 days without clarity on the charges against him. Gambaryan's detention began in late February 2024 while he was in Nigeria for discussions on Digital asset Policies, with assurances of safety during his visit.
Following his arrest on Tax evasion and money laundering allegations, concerns have arisen within the crypto community regarding the legitimacy of the charges. U.S. Representative French Hill (R-AR) denounced Gambaryan’s arrest as a political maneuver by Nigerian authorities.

Furthermore, Gambaryan’s health has deteriorated significantly during his imprisonment, as he has battled malaria and double pneumonia. Disturbing footage from a court appearance in Abuja in early September depicted Gambaryan's physical struggles, exacerbated by a herniated disc.
Expressing her anguish at her husband's plight, Yuki Gambaryan called for justice and compassion in her husband’s treatment. She emphasized the injustice and inhumanity her husband faces daily, stressing the need for his release and a resolution to the ordeal.
